Return to the Scene

Of course my only free day to stay home with Jacob this past week was Thursday, the day that Ana comes to clean the house. Instead of waking up at 8 and both Jacob and I staying in our pj's until after lunch, we had to be up and out the door by 8:30 and stay out until noon. I just feel weird in the house with someone cleaning, and I don't want Jacob, Scoot, or I to get in her way.

We had a great morning planned. Jacob and I were headed to Denny's for breakfast, then an indoor playground area that my play group goes to. We haven't gone with the play group yet, but I thought this would be a good time to test it out and see if Jacob was big enough to enjoy.

Breakfast was great! Jacob had all the tables around us wrapped around his finger; to the point that he threw a crayon down and the man from the table behind us got up to return the crayon to Jacob. Here I was just going to leave it on the ground, but Jacob had already trained people from other tables to pick up his stuff for him.

After Jacob scarfed down his Jr. Grand Slam we headed to Jumpin' Jaks to play for a few hours, but when we pulled up they were still closed even though they were supposed to open 20 minutes ago.

The weather was cloudy and not too hot so we moved on to the park. The same park I split my knee open at a few months ago.

When we got close I texted Michael to have his phone close since we were going to try Meyer Park again, but there were no worries, it ended up being a perfect day.

Jacob made friends on the playground as he took over the tubes you climb through. Learned that he loves going down slides and it is almost just as much fun to try and climb up them too. Then of course there is nothing better than the swing.

After the swings I was taking Jacob back to the car when I realized we lost a shoe. As we went back to the swings to find it Jacob kept reaching for the now packed playground. Since he was ready to keep going we went out towards the picnic area and played in the grass instead of heading straight to the car. This was the best part of the park because Jacob decided he didn't want to sit and play. Instead while holding my hand he walked from the very back of the park all the way to the car. It was a slow trek, but he loved every second of it.

Kissy Face

We've been working on getting Jacob to do kisses, and every now and then he'll do it in front of the mirror, but it isn't a common thing yet...at all.

We have realized though that if you make a kissy face he'll move his face toward you. Tonight was the extreme of it. For about 30 minutes if Michael or I made the face he would climb up to get his lips to our lips, even if he was across the room.

It is the absolute sweetest thing.

The funniest though is at one point I made the face and he rushed over, pushed his face towards mine - mouth open, and tilted his head as if he was going for a serious kiss.

Love the new trick!

First Birthday Party

Not Jacob's first birthday, but his first time going to a first birthday party.

We had a great time and stayed an hour past Jacob's bed time, which didn't seem to bother him at all. He would have stayed playing as long as possible.

They had a great tent set up with a water/sand table, inflatable pool filled with balls, and some other kid toys. The pool with balls was definitely the favorite and perfect because he was able to play and yet was contained to an area so I didn't have to chase after him continuously.

Pure Joy

On Friday night we went to dinner with Mamoo, Papoo, Great Grandma Mimi and a couple friends. Jacob was devouring his quesadillas when one of our friends asked me if he had been crying. I immediately said no because he hadn't frowned or made a sad sound the entire time.

Then I took at his face and saw one lone tear falling down his cheek. The only explanation I could think of is that my child loves to eat so much that he cries for joy when he has a good meal.

Sleeping In

We've been working on getting Jacob to sleep in later - mainly because sleeping past 6:30 on the weekend was starting to feel like a dream.

We started by making him sleep in as late as possible on week days when we had to take him to day care. Instead of getting him up early and letting him play while we got ready, we kept him in his crib until about 10 minutes before we left. He quickly got used to this and had no problem sleeping in a little later.

Then on weekends and days I was home we let him stay in his crib until he woke up just chatting. If he woke up to cry for a second or two we'd let him put himself back to sleep. This made a great change in both his morning attitude and need for naps.

Anyway...all of that leads to the fact that this morning I had work extremely hard to wake Mr. Man up for breakfast at 8:00 AM, and it was amazing!

Catching Up

Jacob has been keeping us extremely busy these past few weeks; his personality is coming out more and more each day and his mobility is getting faster and faster at the same time. Now that my excuse for not updating for a while is out there, on to the new stuff!

We are now just a couple weeks away from Jacob's first birthday. I say that a lot, mainly because I still can't believe that our little baby will be a year old soon. When people ask his age we'll no longer be answering in half month increments, instead it will be just over a year for a few months.

The party is planned, invitations went out this morning and Michael and I are both getting excited about the party. Mostly because it's Jacob's party, but also because it is the first party we've thrown in over a year.

Jacob is so close to walking, but he doesn't seem to have much care about it. We try to show him how, but he forces himself to a sitting position before we get very far. All of a sudden about two days ago he started trying to take one step away from whatever he's holding on to every once in a while, but no success yet. It will come.

We also went to his first parade this past weekend for St. Patrick's Day. We had to get there early for a spot, so by the time the parade started he was exhausted and angry at the parade for causing such a ruckus. This attitude lasted until an ambulance float went by throwing out green stress balls, which is apparently the best thing on Earth. He wouldn't let go of the silly balls, even when he finally did fall asleep.

Below are some pictures from the parade and all of his new silliness.

Driving his fire truck around the living room

Bubbles in the back yard

Filling up for the parade...or just because he loves food

Not sure what the whole fuss about the parade is about

Now there's some fun to it

Oh Wonderful Sleep

Mr. Man is now 10 months old, and I don't want to jinx it, but, he is an amazing sleeper!

We started at the end of last week by letting Jacob cry for a little while and then going in to comfort him and just repeating instead of taking him out and into the swing. For something we were so scared to do, it was honestly pretty easy.

A couple nights ago Jacob was playing around on Michael's lap and didn't seem tired at all even though it was 30 minutes past bed time. We decided to put him in bed and see what happened.

Complete silence.

The wide awake boy laid down in his crib and instantly went to sleep.

Then last night he repeated this process, even though he was exhausted before going to bed and not so playful. It works in the middle of the night too. He wakes up once or twice in the night and we go in lay him back down, and rub his back to calm him down.

Even when I snuck into his room this morning in search for a pair of shoes and woke him up all I had to do was lay him back down and he was back out like a light.

I can't believe we waited so long to do this.

Children's Museum

Last weekend we took Jacob to the Children's Museum with our friend Colin and his adorable 3 year old, Carina.
We went on a Sunday a couple minutes after they opened, and I think that was the smartest thing we could have done because as we were leaving the place was packed. Even the toddler room we were in was almost full to capacity and there were families lined up waiting to get in.
Jacob took only a couple minutes to get comfortable with the new place and then went straight into exploration mode.

Jacob patiently waiting for us to finish up in the big kid area and head up to the toddler room.

Getting comfortable with the new area and ready to go.

Jacob even made a new friend, even though he couldn't care less the little 10 month old boy just wanted to follow him around.

He even had his first "date" - of course there was parent supervision.

Mommy - I don't want to leave the truck yet.

What do you have in your ball pit? I think I want those!

New Do

I had high hopes to post pictures from Jacob's first snow fall today, but we didn't even get one snowflake. Just a ton of ice.
Instead I'm finally going to catch up on some other firsts.

He was such a good boy during his first haircut.
They said he could either sit in my lap or we could try one of the seats that look like cars. Since we had just gone to the Children's Museum and he loved the truck there I knew he'd be excited to sit in a car with steering wheel for him to play with.
Although he was completely serious while talking to the stylist, as soon as he got in the car his whole attitude changed to pure happiness. They even had a video of Elmo playing right in front of the car which was nice except it kept skipping. He'd hear Elmo's voice and watch intently until it froze up again and then he'd get distracted playing with the car until Elmo came back on.

I knew his hair was long but had no clue how long it was until she started pulling it up to make snips.

And the final outcome....

On His Own

Last Thursday I went to a painting class thing with my mom's group (actually only one other person went, but it was still so much fun), and I joked to Michael that if Jacob decided to start walking while I was gone he should push him down and make him wait. There have been no real signs that he's about to start walking any time soon, but we both just have this feeling.
Of course half way through the class I get a text that Jacob had been standing at the table and then all of a sudden Michael looked over and he wasn't holding on anymore. Instead he stood there staring at his hands in the air until Michael startled him and he realized he wasn't holding on. I decided not to believe him that it happened and that maybe he was leaning on the table since he does that all the time.

This morning Michael was getting ready while Jacob and I played on the floor. He was standing holding on to me when all of a sudden he deliberately let go of me and struggled to stabilize for a second before grabbing me again. I couldn't believe he not only stood on his own for a bit, but also that he was really trying to do it and not just accidentally getting distracted.

We have just a few more days before his 10 month mark, maybe there's still a chance he'll be walking before 10 months.

Step by Step

Jacob has so much fun walking with his walker now. For the past couple nights he has been doing laps back and forth and loving every minute with it. Along with getting "ma ma ma" down I really can't believe how quickly he's growing up.

- Don't mind the laundry on the table...it isn't normally like that.

It Burns!

Tonight for diner we had pot roast, green beans and carrots. I steamed all the veggies, but the green beans were too crunchy for Jacob to get down; he just left them in his mouth while he stuffed everything else in. Before I steamed the carrots I put some seasoning with a bit of spice which I thought wouldn't be too much.
He loved the pot roast, cheese and crackers, and we were getting him to eat the carrots (he'd had about 2 baby carrots) when all of a student he started yelling and sticking his tongue out. I felt so bad that the spices must have burnt his tongue.
We gave him some more cheese and it was quickly relieved, and because we fixed it so quickly I can say without much regret it was kind of cute how he stuck his tongue out like that and we instantly.
The good part of me ruining all the food (except for the meat) for Jacob was that he got cinnamon crackers with yogurt between them and he absolutely loved it!

New Trick!

He just realized he can stick his tongue out, and it is so freaking adorable.

9 Months

Jacob hit the 9 month mark this week. Wow! Where does time go?
Last night Michael was talking about how he can't wait for baseball season to start because it is perfect timing to Jacob (he'll be 1 year). We won't watch much baseball, but he'll love walking around seeing everything and playing in the play area. I can't believe we're planning outings like that when just a few months ago I was impressed to see him sit by himself for a few seconds.

Some of Jacob's newest tricks:
- Waving. He started it a while ago by opening and closing his hand at random times, but then stopped for a while and just pointed at people, and now we're back to waving. Mommy however still gets the point - like, "I found you!"
- This isn't really an accomplishment for Jacob, but something that helps him grow: Michael and I have opened the bubble a bit and aren't as worried about all the germs. We let Jacob explore almost everywhere now including playgrounds, which make Jacob so happy.
- Scoot and Jacob have a love hate relationship (the hate part is only from Scoot's side and doesn't last long). Jacob is learning to "pet" Scoot which mainly consists of patting him on the side. Scoot doesn't mind that, but he's not thrilled with the fact Jacob is learning to grab everything, which includes Scoot's hair and tail. This always happens when Scoot is just falling asleep. On the loving side though they play together too. Jacob will grab Scoot's frisbee from him and crawl off, Scoot follows and then they play tug-of-war with it. Once Scoot gets the frisbee back he acts like Jacob is chasing him. So cute!
- He's getting used to bath and is realizing it is a play time too instead of just a silly thing his parents do to him.
- Mirrors are AMAZING! Jacob went to the mall with me and loved it because I stopped in front of almost every mirror for him to smile and yell at himself. In fact earlier tonight he took a fall that scared him and started wailing right as Michael was on the phone. I couldn't bend down to get the pacifier so I raced (hobbled) him to the bathroom to look in the mirror. He calmed down and was soon laughing.
- In the past week he's started letting go of things while he's standing. It doesn't last long and is almost like he is just testing it out, but it is the start to running.
- Just recently he's started chewing on his feet. If he's wearing socks he likes to bite the toe of the sock and pull to see if he can get the sock off. (Picture to come soon)

Doctor type stuff:
- Length: 28 inches - just below 50th percentile
- Weight: 20lbs 5.5oz - 50th percentile
- Head: Michael went to the appointment and didn't tell me, but he did say it is at 50th
- We're starting to decrease his formula intake to get rid of his extra feedings. He's at about 24oz a day and we need to take 5-10 oz out.

Worst Fear

I took Jacob to the park today to make up for making him go to the mall with me yesterday. It was overcast out and rained like crazy yesterday so I had high hopes that people wouldn't be there. Yeah, not so much. Apparently everyone had the same idea. The trails were full and the playgrounds packed with kids running around.

We sat by the lake to watch people feed the ducks, found a spot on the swings, and then ventued to the baseball field to roam freely. We made it a great experience and were ready to go home.

I had Jacob in my arms and we started to the car. About half way back i stumbled. Immediately I knew I was going to fall and had to keep Jacob safe. It's strange how quickly you fall, but I could remember every part of it trying to move my body in a way to keep him surrounded and safe from the impact. When we hit the ground I had succeeded in keeping Jacob completely safe.

A jogger saw us go down and came over to help. She held Jacob for me while I regained my composure. Stupidly I looked at the gash in my knee to assess the damage and instantly began to get woozy, a minute later I was out cold.

Waking up and seeing this stranger holding Jacob scared me more than the fall or the pain. I was so glad to see her still standing closely and taking care of Jacob instead of all the other horrible scenarios that played in my head. When I woke up the next time she was still there with Jacob and now two more men. One last time out and the group was still there, but this time with 911 on the phone for an ambulance to come and mend up my knee.

I had both Michael and family on their way over to take care of Jacob, and they got their just in time to head to the hospital.

Now 12 stitches later and a lot of pain killers, Jacob is completely safe and at home, I'm healing, Michael is taking care of both Jacob and me, and I'm a bit nervous to walk around and carry Jacob.

Jacob the Explorer

Jacob has found a love for the park.
We've tried three of them so far, and with each of them he can go from fast asleep or semi-happy to ecstatic by simply climbing on play

The swings have been the favorite so far, but it is starting to be eclipsed by other fun equipment.

Going down slides is still a bit scary, but trying to climb up is fun

Grinding

Jacob has had his two front bottom teeth for a while, and now he has the two top ones in and the ones right next to them on their way.

1) It is very strange to see my little man smile with his teeth in his mouth. I never thought that would be strange, but it really is. He's had this huge smile with nothing there and all of a sudden it is a toothy smile.

2) Jacob is getting used to having teeth in his mouth by grinding them. It sounds like nails on a chalkboard and can make you cringe from across the room when he starts rubbing those teeth together. We want to get rid of this horrible racket as soon as possible, but everything seems to say it is normal. We've even taken to giving Jacob his pacifier more often than needed to pause the grinding.

6 teeth in/coming and one step closer from a baby to little boy.

Christmas is Coming, the Goose is Getting Fat...

I love the holidays. I love all the red and white candy cane striped decor, the crisp coolness of the weather, the smell of a fresh Christmas tree, and almost every single song about Santa and Christmas. It may not have the best meal (Thanksgiving), but it truly is the most wonderful time of the year.

For the past few year the holidays have been a blur. When I signed up to work retail, I would have never thought the marketing manager had to be there on all the holidays and work events almost every weekend during the holidays. It kind of made me forget how much I loved the holidays as a time to celebrate with family.

This year however, I sent the kids off for Christmas break on Friday and am subbing at the daycare for two days next week and then I'm off until after the new year! The house is decorated, all the gifts are bought and wrapped, we're ready for some special visitors, and I can't wait for Jacob's first Christmas.

Below are some pictures of Jacob's preparations

Jacob showed us how all the cool kids are wearing their Santa hats this year

"How many days til Christmas mom? I can't tell now that I pulled the Snowman off."

The past few nights have been kind of hectic at our house which delays dinner and causes me to improvise for Jacob's dinner. The other night my quick and easy fix was a great suggestion from Jacob's Mamoo - vegetable soup. The veggies are soft, there is a broth to make it tastier and I found one with alphabet noodles - the perfect size for him to handle.
All of the foods he's had to eat so far have only been messy because of dropped pieces and mushiness, but not because of sauce yet. This however was messier than either of us expected.

The start of the fun

Pretty yummy

What mess are you talking about?
